What is Maara Kai?
Our Maara kai (Food gardens) workshop focuses on the traditional ways that Maaori did their gardening, from the types of vegetables they planted to the tools that were used. Maaori have a strong connection to Papatuanuku (Earth Mother) which helps them gather strategies and resources to grow abundance of kai. We highlight the four main crops that were brought over on the waka to Aotearoa. These crops include Kuumara (sweet potato), Hue (Gourd), Uwhi (Yam) and Taro.
